TIM DECHENT

Wiesbaden, Germany

My name is Tim and I’ve started photography just two years ago in 2010. I grew up in Germany in a lazy small town, really boring. There was absolutely nothing do with yourself than being creative and do something in the art sector to get out of it. So I started to play guitar in a band. It never really fullfills me but lead my path to photography.

In 2010 we arranged a photoshooting with the lovely Allister Ann from Nashville and from that day on I was hooked! I joined her Euro-Trip, bought my first camera in Berlin and soaked everything in I could possibly learn from her on the road. A little plastic fantastic diana mini.

There was never the question about digital vs film … I just loved the grain, the leaks the imperfect perfection of analog photography. Soon I got my hands on a old Canon AE1 and tried out Polaroids, lomography, pretty much everything you could imagine.

so my artist name “lostinagoodway” is truly my story. Photography set me free and I got lost in it …but in a good way.

Focus on MELCHIOR TERSEN

Paris, France

My name is Melchior Tersen, I live in the Parisian suburb.
I started taking pictures almost by chance. I continued when I realized that I could never draw or play a musical instrument.

I photograph mainly with compact film cameras that anyone can buy on ebay. I don’t do adjustment, settings, flash, etc. I llike mistakes, over-exposed photos. I like the family portraits taken with disposable cameras.

My inspirations come mainly from popular culture, but also from the French hip-hop culture or the metal scene that take place in the province.
I love animals and nature. I’d like to have a car so that I could go and take photos of the countryside, hunters, wild boars, advertising boards in the middle of fields, boys chatting up girls on their motorbikes… With the same camera than Alec Soth!
But I have no car, no driving license, and I don’t have Alec Soth’s camera. I need to get myself to work.

I recently rescued a mouse from drowning in the kitchen sink where I work. I will soon get a pigeon tattooed on my arm.

Ha and also, I’m gonna see the band “OM” on a gig and do exhibitions with people I like.

CRISTA LEONARD

Andorra

I feel a bit naked when I don’t have the structure of questions and I have to do a freestyle version of describing myself, or my photos or both as really I suppose we’re intertwined, like lovers…no that’s a joke, sort of. I’m actually re-discovering a love for writing, perhaps it has to do with the fact that I realised I’ve been feeling a bit static lately and have started reading again, I used to read every day but modern life took over and I forgot to sit down in a chair with a cup of tea and read a whole book. I’m deviating, I suppose I should say a little about myself, I live between Andorra in the mountains and Barcelona in the city, the balance is essential for me, I grew up in the mountains but I would go to London at least 3 times a year with my mother so I need the thrill and culture of the city. I started shooting photos at school in a very casual way, I was too shy to shoot portraits of people so I would shoot pictures of the mountains and skies. Now I’m not really so shy so I like to shoot people, people surrounded by space and nature. Photography is wonderful, I dream about it constantly and I’m relieved that I stuck to my teenage plan of travelling the world as a job.

On a final note, I am a fan of old things, old cars, old record players, old furniture, old cameras, I’m a big music fan, I like dancing, I like being in the snow, I like swimming in rivers and lakes, I like drinking wine, I like going on road trips, I like getting lost. Etc etc!

MICHAL PUDELKA

Brastislava, Slovak Republic

I’m a 21 years old visual artist from Bratislava, Slovak Republic, working mostly with photography, collages and videos.

The concept of my work in one sentence would be : “strory telling camouflaged expressions of my inner opinions, a mirror of today society.”

Currently, I’m obsessed with the concept of similarities with differences. There are many social groups where people look the same or act the same and I try to reflect this phenomen in a bit of an ironical but poetical way.

JEFF LUKER

New York, United States

I am 26 years old. I live in Brooklyn, New York now. But I’ve lived lots of other places too. Actually I lived in Washington when I was little. We had goats and lived in a trailer. The goats used to eat poison ivy and because of that when I drank their milk I became immune to it myself. I never got poison ivy my whole life until I was about 22 and was working on a cranberry bog in Massachusetts. The goats had been gone a long time by then and I had moved onto cow’s milk, soy milk, rice milk and even almond milk!

MARIJA STRAJNIC

Belgrade, Serbia

Hello, my name is Marija, I’m 25 and I live in Belgrade, Serbia. I take photographs of anything that touches me for some reason in my everyday life and then store these photographs as a material for photo series that i later arrange on my website. These series tend to tell mostly metaphorical and hyperbolic stories that create certain feelings inside the observer. The best ones are even trying to reveal some kind of truth about the world. Basically, what I’m trying to do is to transform the moments of my everyday life into a lyrical narratives familiar to anyone.

CHRISTINA NELSON

Oslo, Norway

First of all I want to capture emotions in my photos, either it’s nature or people I’m photographing. I like to capture those unique moments, so that I can remember them and freeze them forever in time.

I photograph people who inspire me through their looks and their personalities or the way they live. I often like to photograph them outside in nature, playing with light and shadows. And I’ve actually just started a new project, where I’ve gone knocking on the door of houses that capture my attention and taken pictures of the people who live in them and all the interesting things they have in their homes.

I live in Norway where we are surrounded by fascinating nature, wild forests and animals. So I love to go outside photographing the amazing landskapes we have. My boyfriend and I, often go on roadtrips to explore and discover new places. I try to capture the special atmospheres and the beauty I see in my surroundings.

I’m a nostalgic at heart, that’s probably why it’s so important to me that my photos portray emotions. I especially like it if my photos make people who look at them feel something or if they bring back memories.

I’ve lived in Norway most of my life, but I’m also half french. I love to go to Paris or travel to the south of France in Provence or on the Riviera. So I guess the french side of me also influences my photography style in many ways.

SAM COLDY

London, UK

I studied Graphic Design. I currently have no photography projects as I’m concentrating on the Design side of things, but I hope to have some in the future. Especially as I’ll be travelling around China for a month in Easter.

My photos are candid and contain no deeper meaning, it’s all for the enjoyment, I simply just try to capture objects and moments I personally find interesting or beautiful. That said, there is a thought process behind them all, as most of my photos are quite minimal in content. I prefer a simple image with one subject as opposed to an image which has lots going on. I really need to start taking more photos. I miss it.

EZGI POLAT

Berlin, Germany

I’m Ezgi, 21years old. I was born in Berlin. I’m living and studying photography in my native city. My work is a form of self-expression - most of the time I’m trying to remain a silent observer, which gives me the possibility to feel comfortable while taking pictures and expressing my thoughts and feelings in a simple way without staging.

I prefer dreamy expressions, pensive faces and silent moments. The people I’m taking portraits of are most of the time in their own world, some of them are friends, sometimes I’m asking a stranger who is not necessarily a beauty, but has something special, which appeals to me. I don’t like focusing just on my photography, I want to see that my model is receptive enough, talking about anything and everything, without seeing just a camera in front of my face.

NICOLA VON LEFFERN

Vienna, Austria

Taking a picture to me is like hitting the ‘freeze’ button on a world that is spinning much too fast to be enjoyable. It gives me the opportunity to remember selectively. I am collecting moments, stocking up on color & light for grey days to come. Photography to me is like writing a diary, just for lazy people that rather point and shoot and start reflecting on it days later, when the film returns from the laboratory.
Images to me are like speaking a universal language. Like silent movies whose plots were understood worldwide without ever needing translation.

Communication without words turned out to be the main reason why I fell deeply in love with photography. I have always had a passion for story telling, images, escapism & voyeurism - so I chose to become a TV journalist & filmmaker. On a study abroad program in Spain I was faced with a number of language barriers and therefore difficulties to work & study in those fields, so I decided to trade my courses on audio- visual media for darkroom & photography assignments on the university of fine arts, salamanca.
The hours in the darkroom there required nothing but patience and of course the usage of analog cameras. I never came to like digital photography after that, neither overly retouched pictures or creating images in photoshop.

I like the realism of analog photography, straight out of the camera.
I love when the medium - the film - plays its part very visually, not only as a canvas for light, but also for texturing and influencing the outcome in surprising ways, meaning grain & light leaks, scratches and so on.

I go through phases of loving certain cameras. Right now my number one companion is the Yashica Zoomate 70 because it is small and robust and can join me everywhere and anytime. Also it is old, I got it from a local thrift store, and seems to have a little bit of a will of its own. Sometimes shots get beautifully out of focus, or the edges turn out to be decorated with little light leaks.
I love the how unpredictable this is.
My other favorite camera of the moment is the Salyut- S (= Салют-C), which was the first attempt by the Soviet camera industry to produce a sophisticated SLR medium format camera and represents a near copy to the Hasselblad 1000F or 1600F. Whoever hasn’t shot with a medium format SLR yet doesn’t know what they are missing out on!

ROBIN MELLWAY

Vancouver, Canada

My name is Robin Mellway. I live on the west coast of Canada, where I spend as much time as possible exploring the wild Pacific coast, rainforests, and mountains. I am compelled to go into wild places. I need to feel the elements, and see and experience the cycles of nature - the lengthening and shortening of days, the migration of birds, animals preparing for raising young or getting ready to hibernate for the winter, the rise and fall of the tide, life and death on different scales.

I’ve been into photography since I was very young, at first just playing around occasionally with my mother’s compact cameras and Polaroid, then with an SLR starting in high school. I have never been one to take a lot of photos. I wait until I sense that a photograph might capture something of the feeling of a place and time and that when I look at it later, it will bring back the essence of a fleeting moment of silent beauty (although I’m only ever at best partially successful).

LAUREN GODDARD

Fleet, England.

My photographs tend to be an amalgamation of books that I’ve read, weird thoughts that I’ve had and a huge obsession with walking through the countryside. I think that my spirituality and interest in deities comes through in the photos that I take, well at least I see it that way.

I’m pretty fortunate to know a lot of rad people that will get in front of the camera for me and do whatever I shout at them. Film is all I shoot with because I’m shit with digital and editing so I lazily rely on my beautiful friends to do all the work.

Photography isn’t really my biggest passion in life, but it gives me something to enjoy. I’m starting at Saint Martins in September doing fashion design foundation.

I’m not entirely sure what first got me into this whole thing called photography but I know for sure that it all happened about two years ago and back then, my photos were not exactly something to be proud of.

Coming from such a background as my country, pushed me to enlarge my own boundaries and eventually have something to call my own, creatively speaking. People here don’t give much of a damn about anything photography-related but weirdly enough, this whole thing stimulated me to create a bunch of beautifully arranged pixels which I call my photos.

I’ve always been interested in photography. I think my father was the first to teach me how to use a reflex camera. I love landscapes, portraits and street photography.

I hate people being pretentious about the act of taking photos. There’s nothing mystical or profound for me in shooting a camera, it’s about keeping a memory of something that has some meaning to you, something that is beautiful. It’s about having fun!

I find inspiration in unexpected locations, in movies, specially old road movies, and specially gus van sant, also in so many photographers, known and unknown. And music, always. These four things are always in my mind: gerry, the brown bunny, two-lane blacktop and vanishing point.

I started photography thanks to a friend who takes beautiful pictures: rafa romero aka árbore. On a trip to the basque country we visited an amazing reservoir named urrotz and we get really impressed.

MORE / Stig De Block

Antwerp, Belgium.

I’m 21 years old, Antwerp based graphic designer / photographer, and go by the name of MORE / Stig De Block. There are two main reasons why I shoot pictures.

One is that I try to capture as much moments in time as possible, I want to be able to always remember them. The other one in that I look for images in my surroundings I have seen before in my head and I try to capture them as closely as possible in a picture.

I always try to add some sort of serenity to my images, to contrast our busy everyday life. I see photography as a form of escape. Most of the time I take pictures of friends and the places where I go. That is why I find it very important to travel at least once a year, to get fresh inspiration for the year to come.

I grew up in the English countryside and my experiences as a child are some of my biggest inspirations in photography. When I was young I spent my days exploring the forests and the fields I lived around. These days I like to create my work in the exact same way, by taking my friends into these environments and to document our exploration with my camera.

I only ever shoot film. I have become somewhat obsessed with experimenting with the medium in the past couple of years using in-camera techniques such as multiple exposures.

MAX GREEN EKELIN

Stockholm, Sweden

I discovered photography in high school and since then I’ve been doing it in various forms.

For me, taking pictures is both a creative thing to do while doing other stuff like hanging with your friends and family or walking in the woods, but also a way of exploring.

I’ve discovered you get so much access to places and people you wouldn’t normally go to or meet, if you have a camera. I did use to care so much if pictures were analog or digital, but i figured that’s just vanity and that there’s so much more to worry about in life that I just don’t have the time to be bothered.

HELEN KORPAK

My name is Helen Korpak and I just turned twenty-two. I live in Helsinky, Finland.

I discovered photography after getting my father’s old camera for my 18th birthday and have actively been taking pictures ever since to the extent that I now study the subject.

Most of my pictures are part of a photographical diary, an introverted kind of photojournalism. I try to be honest but not obvious. I’m confused by the feeling of loneliness and alienation and try to investigate that through my pictures.

For me, photography is about being able to capture microseconds of life. I like spontaneity.

DANIEL GRANT

Ipswich, England

I always have the camera with me in a back pack. It gives me a motive to hang out with people, to create a situation. The camera gives a distraction, a distance, which allows the real situation to develop. We both know the camera, and the photos aren’t all there is to the interaction. It’s strange that I feel that that has to happen, but it totally is necessary.

I’ve found. What I really need is another person to tell me what’s good and what’s bad - I was never taught, or anything. What I really try to avoid is my work being construed as at all fashionable. If people are reading fashion into my photos, they’re out of their fucking minds.

I’m at the point now where I can be honest - a photo doesn’t have to be a certain thing, or conform to a genre, or even anything in my head, like an expectation. I mostly imagine people being bemused by my work. One photo will follow the previous, and I’m hoping they feel as lost as I do when I look through them.

I imagine, and maybe want, people to wonder what sort of life I’m living. But it’s not a lie, or a stage, I’m doing all these things, I don’t edit any of my photos…I don’t know.

Photography is a main interest of mine. I see photography as a social subject. For everyone to see, share and relate to.

I have never read, watched, listened to anything about photography. I have simply learned through trail error. My belief is based on the reality of photography. I am not interested in studios, but on the street itself.

I think of photography as a journal, carrying a camera at all times, taking pictures of everyone I meet.

Currently, I am using a Canon 7 (range finder).

JULIETTE STEEN

Brisbane, Australia

My name is Juliette Steen. I was born in Germany on the 19th of August in 1991 and moved to Australia when I was a year old. I grew up on the beach in Byron Bay and started taking photos when I had the guts to handle my mum’s then-heavy camera, which was at about age ten.

I have a lot of moments in my life where I see or feel something and think, ‘This moment needs to be remembered. I can’t forget this image’. So I take a photo of it and feel happy knowing I’ve recorded my own history.

What deeply and endlessly fascinates me is the natural environment around me and people’s true nature and moods. I guess that’s the outcome of being a bit of a hippie child and travelling around Australia seeing the red earth and orange skies. I’ll always have that in me, and I’ll always be searching for it in my photography.

Hi, my name is Tatjana, I’m from Serbia. I live and study in Belgrade but recently I’ve decided to change scenery and move back to the place I grew up, at least for a while. That change affected me a lot and especially the way I photograph.

My closest friend, who is also my favorite model, is here as well, so we spend most of our free time taking photos. I’m not lazy like I was in Belgrade and asmuch as I like cities, there is just something about simple life in the countryside. It makes you more productive and less depressed.

Since I’ve started taking photos I can’t imagine one day without a camera. My favourite part is after the films are developped and the joy that goes with it. I get excited like a little child every single time, there’s nothin quite like it.
